The Australian Institute of Architects has announced the winners of the 2018 Victorian Architecture Awards.
A grand reworking of RMIT University’s central Melbourne campus – the New Academic Street project – was the most fêted project of the night. Designed by a consortium of architecture practices led by architects with links to the university – Lyons with NMBW Architecture Studio, Harrison and White, MvS Architects and Maddison Architects – the project received the Victorian Architecture Medal, as well as the top prizes in the Urban Design and Educational Architecture categories and awards for Interior Architecture, Sustainable Architecture and the Melbourne Prize.
James Legge, jury chair, said “The collaboration of architects involved in this project has been a highly effective way to bring diversity and richness, and to avoid the single author approach that often marks similar projects.”
“Existing buildings from various eras have been excavated and incised to create arcade-like connections and internal streets. The effect has been to stitch RMIT into the surrounding city fabric, allowing the public in and creating dynamic and engaging environments for the students and staff. The project provides a critical piece of urban design for this area of the city.”
Amy Muir, Victorian chapter president, said the winning projects represented the diversity of work being completed across the state.
“Victorians understand the value of good design and the enormous benefits it brings to building engaged and resilient communities. The award winning architects are not prepared to accept the status quo and have worked incredibly hard to deliver outstanding contributions to our state’s architecture and infrastructure landscape.”
Winners will progress to the National Architecture Awards, to be announced in November. All entries will be exhibited at No Vacancy Gallery QV from 22 May to 3 June.
