2013 Houses Awards: Sustainability

Sustainability Mihaus Studio by Sue Harper Architects Houses Awards

Jury comment

Sustainability can be assessed at many levels but essentially, unless it underpins the design as a whole, it simply becomes an “add-on.” The prefabricated and flexible Mihaus is in the tradition of modular buildings that can function as stand-alone structures or form additions to existing structures.

In this instance, refinement and a remarkably light structural system define the level at which the architect has developed this system. Standardization characterizes a good modular system, and here the “kit of parts” contributes to cost deductions with no negative impact on the architecture. Infill modules are beautifully selected and managed.

In a world where oversized has overtaken common sense, it is reassuring to see a commitment to the controlled use of resources in a residence that is aesthetically pleasing, easily assembled and flexible enough to accommodate a variety of circumstances.

Mihaus consolidates and redefines cost-efficient modular construction at a level that is accessible to the public.
