A “quintessential” Queensland building has taken the highest honour in the Australian Institute of Architects state chapter awards.
Cairns Performing Arts Centre by CA Architects and Cox Architecture was awarded the Queensland Architecture Medallion for its celebration of its tropical location and the cultural diversity of the region.
“CPAC is undeniably a building that responds to its site, its city and its wet tropical environment, reflecting the colours, filtered light, lush vegetation and lifestyle of the tropics” said jury chair Eloise Atkinson.
Across the awards more than 40 projects across 13 categories have been recognized. “We have seen a particularly strong year in education,” Atkinson said. “Public buildings have also been impressive particularly in the regions, and as always in Queensland, residential projects - both ‘new’ and ‘alterations and additions’ - have been large categories and of a very high standard. We have seen the integration of landscape in all building types from the north to south and way out west.”
Cairns Performing Arts Centre also received the FDG Stanley Award for Public Architecture. In the educational architecture category, Brisbane’s first vertical school, Fortitude Valley State Secondary College by Cox Architecture received the Jennifer Taylor Award.
All winners awards and named awards will progress to the National Architecture Awards to be announced in November.
