Jury comment
Brahman Perera’s beautiful entries in this year’s awards really impressed the judges, making the Melbourne-based designer a very worthy recipient. His narratives and creative process are genuinely heartfelt, and this engages not only his clients, but all who experience his designs across residential, hospitality, workplace and multi-residential. He has a maturity that demonstrates strong design principles and an individual style that shows both flair and restraint. His projects are rich and thoughtful, and the jurors think he has great potential to contribute to the advancement of Australian interior design, which they believe he will fully achieve.
Practice profile
With boundless creative energy and an entrepreneurial spirit, Brahman Perera found establishing a solo interior design studio part of a natural progression. After studying at RMIT for a bachelor of architectural design and a master of architecture, Perera worked in fashion design and curation before he honed his interior design skills at some of Melbourne’s most reputable studios.
Building on this creative foundation, Brahman established his own practice in early 2020, at the age of 33. Brahman has since developed a portfolio of nearly ten projects across residential, workplace and hospitality, each expressing his layered and personalized approach to interiors.
In addition to design, Brahman is an impassioned advocate for diversity in the industry. His Sri Lankan heritage and belief in the power of representation has seen him participate in panel discussions, award juries and interviews to demonstrate the importance of inclusion and visibility of diverse identities and perspectives.
