2022 Australian Interior Design Awards: Emerging Interior Design Practice - joint award

Pattern Studio

Jury comment

The retail, hospitality, commercial and residential designs of Pattern Studio display work of a high standard that demonstrates strong design principles. Founded by Josh Cain and Lily Goodwin, the practice’s design strength lies in strong compositions and a sense of calm, along with beautifully considered details. Their projects have been approached with maturity and ease and the jury has no doubt that the practice will contribute to the advancement of Australian interior design.

Practice profile

This micro studio comprises two designers: Lily Goodwin and Josh Cain, both under thirty when they established the practice. Formed in reaction to the hierarchical and conservative nature of the multi-national companies where its designers previously worked, Pattern Studio sought to be what its larger competitors by their nature simply could not: swift and progressive.
Pattern Studio has received national recognition for its project work and its designers. In addition, the pair has been internationally published, with its first retail fitout featured in Dezeen’s “Top 10 Retail Spaces in 2018.”

Pattern Studio believes that small is beautiful and recognizes that in young creatives, there lies immense talent and potential that can be realized when properly nurtured.
Since 2016, the duo has developed a reputation for partnering with innovative industry disrupters, the studio’s size allowing it to realize progressive design visions at a lightning-fast pace.
