The 2022 Far North Queensland Awards were dominated by culturally inclusive and environmentally sensitive projects for first nations communities.
The Australian Institute of Architects announced the awards on 3 June, coinciding with end of Reconciliation Week.
The awards’ highest honour, the Eddie Oribin Award for Building of the Year went to Western Cape Communities Trust Administration Centre by Clarke and Prince, which is a central facility for 11 Traditional Owner groups in the Cape York peninsula.
“Through extensive engagement with the WCC traditional owner groups, this project successfully develops the value of embracing holistic cultural narratives through the buildings siting, its landscape and integration in the architecture and interiors,” the jury said.
Gurriny Yealamucka Health and Wellbeing Centre by POD (People Oriented Design) with Coburn Architecture also received a top accolade, the Far North Queensland Project of the Year Award, while Mundingalbay Yidinji Eco-Cultural Arrival Facilities by Philip Follent Architects received regional commendations in the Small Project Architecture and Sustainable Architecture categories.
All regional commendations will progress to the Queensland Architeture Awards to be announced on 24 June.
