The climate crisis, mental health, and suburban housing models are just a few of the diverse and complex challenges that architects proposed solutions to in their submissions to the 2022 AA Prize for Unbuilt Work.
“When the AA Prize for Unbuilt Work was first initiated by Ian McDougall in 1992, his intention was to promote discussion and debate about contemporary design ideas at the time of their production, when they are acutely relevant to the current circumstances,” said Katelin Butler, jury chair and editorial director of Architecture Media. “This approach is now more critical than ever; we need to think deeply and creatively about the future impact of the design decisions we are making today.”
From 89 entries, 20 have been shortlisted by the jury, which also included Julian Anderson (Bates Smart director and 2021 prize winner), Mel Dodd (head of Department of Architecture at MADA, Monash University), Justin Hill (Kerry Hill Architects director), and Lee Hillam (Dunn and Hillam Architects co-director).
The winner of the prize will be announced on 13 January 2022 on ArchitectureAU.com and in the January/February issue of Architecture Australia magazine.
