Of the many different awards programs organized by our publisher Architecture Media, I must admit the Eat Drink Design Awards have always been my favourite. And the two days of judging are always the best days of my working year. To be transported to incredible dining, drinking and retail interiors from around Australia and New Zealand, alongside industry leaders I look up to, and to engage with them in discussion and debate about the state of design, well, what’s not to love? What an honour and a privilege it is to be a juror for these awards. Each year, I’m reminded that our designers are creating among the best hospitality interiors in the world.
For two days in August, the 2022 jury members – Melissa Leong (Masterchef Australia judge and food writer), Rodney Eggleston (founder, March Studio), Shannon Bennett (chef and restaurateur), Fiona Lynch (founder, Fiona Lynch Office) and me – came together to review this year’s entries. What we found, despite two-plus years of hardship, was a tenacious, resilient hospitality industry, and architecture and design of an impeccable standard. Congratulations to all the winners, and the commended and shortlisted projects. And congratulations also to the 2022 Hall of Fame inductee, Melbourne icon Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar, designed in 1954 by Smith, Tracey, Lyon and Brock. Those stately red letters on its facade, the communal counter seating, the hearty plates of pasta, the familiar warmth – generations of people have come to know and love this family-run Italian cafe and eatery. Pellegrini’s is at the heart of Melbourne’s soul, and its induction into the Eat Drink Design Awards Hall of Fame is long overdue.
