Jury Citation
The “Art Wall” building in Kings Cross uses a simple rusting steel screen topped by an advertising hoarding to provide an extraordinarily powerful and iconic intervention in an intersection famous for its crassness. It is simultaneously aggressive, playful, sophisticated and modest in scale. It mediates between residential and commercial and gives the Cross a showcase for public art with a benevolence unusual in the district.
The particular use of Corten-type steel over a cheap and practical structure integrates the whole building into a tight sculptural geometry without compromising the essential tawdriness of the surroundings.
