Construction begins on Brisbane Olympic cycle park

Construction has begun on Brisbane’s new Olympic-standard cycling venue – the Murarrie Recreation Reserve International Cycle Park project.

Designs for the $35-million recreational upgrade project were released in 2022 and include an international-standard cycling track designed by Bligh Tanner, as well as a 500-metre speed skating track and a multi-purpose clubhouse by Cox Architecture. The cycle park is expected to be in use prior to the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Brisbane lord mayor Adrian Schrinner said the park is anticipated to be completed by early 2024, and will not only draw visitors to the city, but also deliver opportunities for local residents.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re learning to ride for the first time or consider yourself an elite cyclist, this will be a free space for people to get outdoors and get active,” said Schrinner. Planned future stages of the park will include a learn-to-ride facility, a BMX track, and public amenities including picnic shelters, barbecues, and a dog off-leash area.

“As a future host city it’s important that we prepare for the Games however it’s also vital that our investments in sporting venues and facilities deliver a legacy that can be enjoyed by the 1.2 million people who call Brisbane home,” he said

Local council has consulted with AusCycling to deliver the project and is working closely with state and federal governments. The existing Murrarie Recreation Reserve will remain closed while the redevelopment is underway.
