Design revealed for redevelopment of Sydney’s largest hospital

Bates Smart and Neeson Murcutt and Neille have won a design excellence competition on a $750 million new building at Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital in Sydney.

The redevleopment will be the most significant upgrade in the hospital’s 140-year history. The design competition was the first ever held by Health Infrastructure, for which it invited three leading architects to participate.

“The winning design was innovative, creative and showcased a skilful response to deliver the core clinical requirements and needs of this important civic and historic health precinct,” a Health Infrastructure fact sheet reads.

The winning team has been appointed to partnering architects who will work in collaboration with lead architect Jacobs on the project.

The RPA is a major teaching hospital in NSW and the largest in the Sydney Local Health District. Opened in 1882, the original building was designed by Mansfield Brothers and is recognised as a state significant building today.

A new hospital facility will be built alongside the historic building, which will undergo refurbishment of its existing spaces. The redeveloped hospital will including expanded emergency department and intensive care units, operating theatres, and improved neonatology services.

NSW health minister Brad Hazzard said the new hospital will be fast-tracked as part of the NSW Government’s COVID-19 Recovery Plan.

More than 700,000 people live in Sydney Local Health District, with over a million people visiting for work, study or to see loved ones daily. Hazzard added Health Infrastructure consulted “extensively” with clinicians, staff, patients and the local community, to ensure the redevelopment would meet a diversity of requirements.

Early works began in 2021 and major construction is due to begin later in 2022.
