Entries have opened for the 2019 World Architecture Festival Awards program. Now in its 12th year, the architecture festival will returning to Amsterdam, to be held at the RAI Convention Centre from 4 to 6 December.
Organizers describe the awards program as “the only architecture awards where architects pitch their work to a panel of expert judges and their peers – all live at the festival in Amsterdam.”
Entrants will be competing across more than 30 categories encompassing completed buildings, future projects and landscape projects. Entries for the awards close on 3 May.
A shortlist will be announced in July. Finalists will then be given the chance to present their projects to specialist juries at the festival. On the final day of the festival, 6 December, the winners of each category will again present their projects to a “super jury” to compete for the a number of overall awards, including World Building of the Year and Future Building of the Year.
The judges, which each year number upwards of a hundred, are drawn from around the world and include a broad range of respected architects and allied professionals.
Australian projects or projects being led by Australian architecture practices were well represented at the 2018 awards, with more than 50 entries across the 536-strong shortlist.
The top prize, for the World Building of the Year, went to Australian-Singaporean practice Woha for Kampung Admiralty, a “substantial” mixed-use building in Singapore, while Sydney practice Tzannes took home the Use of Certified Timber Prize.
Two regional Australian projects also won their categories, with Maitland Riverlink by Chrofi and McGregor Coxall judged winner of the Civic and Community – Completed Buildings category and the Piano Mill by Conrad Gargett winning Culture – Completed Buildings.
Entries made to the WAF Awards before 12 April will receive an early bird discount.
