Architecture was perhaps the first art form to seek a kind of global positioning – the Greek civilisation claimed the Mediterranean through its orders, as did the Romans through theirs and the Turks who followed.
The arches of the Spaniards are stamped throughout the Americas just as the forms of Islamic architecture define the Middle East.
When a genuinely global direction in the construction industry did finally emerge last century, it aesthetically and technically interpreted the industrial and social revolution creating an underlying internationalisation of architecture. This has been the cause of much division and debate. By way of reaction, regionalism sought to rebalance and emphasise cultural difference rather than the inevitable mono-cultural fusion of architectural solutions. At a local level, the very question of cultural values influencing the design of the built environment is being considered within the confines of local development systems.
This convention will address many of the contemporary issues that face both local and global practice for architects, designers, consultants and regulators. The RAIA/Designbuild Convention is the peak event for the profession, held every two years in a different city. It will stimulate thinking and new directions and enable the attending audience to participate in the wider debate, as well as attend best practice seminars.
Melbourne is a wonderful city, and is host to this event. The social program for attendees is extensive, with guided tours to inaccessible buildings and major projects nearing completion.
