Hassell has been appointed to prepare a new master plan for Burswood Park, a 56-hectare public open space located along Perth’s Swan River foreshore.
At present the park includes playgrounds, landscaped gardens, floral displays, sculptures, bike trails, a heritage trail and picnic spots and functions as a major event space for charity, sporting and cultural events.
The Burswood Park Master Plan is intended to deliver a “blueprint” for the park’s future, framing the long-term development of the waterfront site over the next 15 years.
“As a leading public park enjoyed by thousands of locals and tourists each year, it is critical that we integrate the needs of our growing community into that plan,” said Linda Kut, general manager of the Burswood Park Board, in a statement.
The most recent alteration to the park occured six years ago, when the public golf course that formed part of the site was closed to accommodate the development of Optus Stadium.
In recent years, Hassell have been involved in the design of several of the peninsula precinct’s recent transformations, including Optus Stadium and Stadium Park and the landscape of the Crown Towers hotel.
According to a press release, the new Burswood Park masterplan will aim to create new community and event spaces, while maintaining a strong commitment to preserving the site’s history and natural environment.
“Burswood Park has all the ingredients of a destination parkland that showcases the best of Western Australia’s active, outdoor lifestyle. It’s also an important piece of Perth’s green infrastructure network, with opportunities to improve the city’s natural systems,” said Anthony Brookfield, Hassell principal.
“The plan will help deliver the Burswood Park Board’s strategic goals – further unlocking the economic, social and cultural activation of the peninsula, while taking care to support the park’s sustainable operation,” said Brookfield.
