Tutors for the project were Nigel Bertram and Paul MinifieDenton Corker Marshall’s Stonehenge Visitor Centre and Interpretive Museum is one of 26 designs selected for the international exhibition Museums of the 21st Century: concepts, projects, buildings • Sydney practitioner Jim Colman has been elected as a vice president of the International Society of City and Regional PlannersWoods Bagot are doing the master plan and Stage 1 designs for Qatar Science and Technology Park • Eugene Cheah, Adrian Doohan, Drue Newcomb, Erica Slocombe and Giorgio Marfella won first prize in the Cork City Library Architectural Ideas Competition • Denton Corker Marshall has won the commission for the Dongqianhu International Educational Forum Complex, a multi-functional development in Ningbo • John Wardle Architects has won part of the design competition for Waitangi Park, a key waterfront site in Wellington, New Zealand. Kerstin Thompson were also short-listed in a joint venture with Architecture Workshop.

NATIONAL

The inaugural Leslie M Perrott/ISS Institute fellowship has been awarded to Timothy HubbardJørn Utzon’s initial sketches and original model of the Sydney Opera House will be displayed together as part of National Treasures from Australia’s Great Libraries at the National Library of Australia until February 12, before travelling to other states • Austrade held workshops at the end of 2005 to raise awareness of the potential for Australian businesses to work in India • The Australia Award for Urban Design has been jointly awarded to the City of Melbourne with Gehl Architects for the Places for People study, and Coomes Consulting with John Piper Traffic for the Melbourne CBD and Pedestrian Traffic Study, commissioned by the City of Melbourne. The Strategic Urban Design Award went to the New South Wales Coastal Urban Design Initiative 2002–2005 and Beyond. The Public Domain Award went to Syrinx Environmental and the City of Perth for Point Fraser Stage 1. The Research and Publication Award went to Kim Dovey of UMelb for Fluid City: Transforming Melbourne’s Urban Waterfront • The Major Award in the 2005 Australian Timber Design Awards went to John Wardle Architects’ Flinders House. The New Building Award went to Sam Crawford Architects for the Bundeena Beach House. Best Renovation and Best Use of Timber as a Structural Element went to C+C Design Construct for Tempe House. These houses were also highly commended in the Major Award. New Buildings or Renovation (students and entrants 30 and under) went to James Pierre du Plessis of Phorm Architecture & Design for Whynot St Tea Room. Residential Class 2, 3 & 9c (apartments, resorts and aged care) went to Haysom Architects for The Byron at Byron. Public and Commercial Buildings, Composite Frame went to Slap Architects in association with J Grunden and V Darby for the Orbost Exhibition Centre. Public and Commercial Buildings, Timber Frame and the Best Use of Timber Engineered Products awards went to Collier and Reid Architects for the Narana Creations Performance Theatre and Exhibition Building. Interior Fitout went to John Wardle Architects for Flinders House. Exterior Structures went to Warwick Donnelly for the Chain Valley Bay Suspension Bridge and Boardwalks. Best Use of Timber Flooring went to John Pilton Walker for JPW Office. Environmental Commitment went to Morris Nunn + Associates for IXL Development. The Innovation Award went to Innovarchi and Timberbuilt for the Timber House of the Future. Best Use of Western Red Cedar went to Saaj Design for New House, Sandringham. Best Use of Cypress went to Simmat & Associates for the Fuzzman House. Best NSW Entry went to Warwick Donnelly for the atrium roof to the Deerubin Centre, Best Queensland Entry went to JMA Architects Qld for Viridian Villas • Tina Jackson is the new Executive Director of the National TrustHoward Raggatt has been awarded Life Fellowship of the RAIA • Chelle Macnaughton, PhD candidate at UMelb, has won the inaugural Lysaght Research Scholarship towards her work on the relationship between sound and architecture • Steven Varady has taken out the Grand Prix in the Dulux Colour Awards, having also won the Residential Interior category. Other winners include Carr Design Group, Commercial Interior; Archidom, Commercial Exterior; Marsh CashmanKoolloos, Residential Exterior; Josh Upston of UTas, Student Years 1–3; and Drew Williamson of USydney, Student Years 4–6.

TASMANIA

Bob Nation opened the new Tasmanian Chapter offices in October • Arts Tasmania has launched Design Island, a new three-year programme. This year’s theme Beneath the Surface, will be explored through a state-wide event including seminars, forums and workshops. An exhibition will be on display from May 5-21 at Hobart’s Mawson Place Waterside Pavilion, before touring to Launceston from May 26 • The RAIA now has a regular feature, “The Column” in Tasmania’s local paper, coordinated by Chapter President Neal Mackintosh and Sam Aukland.

VICTORIA

The State Government has created the Office of the Victorian Government Architect. John Denton is the new Victorian Government Architect and Shelley Penn is Associate • Eli Giannini and Sue Buchanan won second prize in the Yering Station Sculpture Award for their installation sure2gro • Winners at the first Architeam Awards include Rexroth Manassman Collective, John Henry Architects and Grant Amon Architects • Tony Mussen retired from UMelb at the end of last year • UMelb is to have a new School of Architecture. Details of the site and architect selection are yet to be announced • The new National Design Centre opened at Federation Square with the inaugural exhibition We’re Home • Preshil Junior School, designed by Kevin Borland, has been added to the Victorian heritage register • The first stage of the Pentridge redevelopment by McGauran Giannini Soon andCrema Bahramis is complete. Work will soon begin on the main square precinct, designed by a team from MGS, CBG, Emery Frost and Tract • Water Sensitive Urban Design Guidelines are now available from the City of Melbourne • The City of Port Phillip Design and Development Awards include: Jackson Clements Burrows, Best New Single Dwelling; OOF! Architecture, Best New Development 2-4 Units; and Williams Boag, Best New Development 5 Units or more • Tony Battersby has been appointed as a director of SJB ArchitectsSzencorp Group has won the Built Environment category at the savewater! Awards for the refurbishment of their South Melbourne offices • Leeton Pointon Architects have won the Architects Registration Board of Victoria Architectural Services Award • Antarctica has been launched, combining architectural practice with expertise in webdesign and multimedia, design research, urban research, urban design and art practice. Those involved include artist and architect Dianne Peacock, architects Graham Crist, Brendan Jones and Simon Whibley, and architect and web designer Peter JohnsMcGauran Giannini Soon has promoted Cameron Lacy to the position of associate.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The Adelaide Festival includes Possible Worlds, a symposium on March 9 about architecture’s role in imagining other environments. Speakers include Lars Spuybroeck, of NOX Architects, Rotterdam; John Bell of FXV, London; Ian McDougall of Ashton RaggattMcDougall; Andrew Benjamin of UTS; and Sue Phillips of Phillips/ Pilkington • The Edmund Wright Heritage Awards saw both the Minister’s Award for Outstanding Contribution and the Heritage Places (Non-Residential) Award go to Chapman Herbert Architects for their work on the City Hall and Cave Garden Stage II Redevelopment in Mt Gambier. Woodhead International received commendations in the Heritage Places (Non-Residential) category for new offices in the Former Megaw & Hogg Building, and the New Development in Heritage category for the Sturt Street Community School • Danvers Schulz and Holland is designing a new community and leisure centre for Renmark Paringa Council • The Hon James Campbell Irwin (Jamie) passed away on November 4, 2005 • Capital Architecture has opened an Adelaide office.

QUEENSLAND

At the NAWIC Queensland chapter awards the Brisbane City Council Crystal Vision award went to Alex Fisher of City Design, while Elizabeth Anderson of Kevin Hayes Architects was recognized for her achievement in the design field and Anne Woolley of Boral for her construction achievements • Construction has begun on a series of sustainable houses for public display throughout Queensland as part of the sustainable homes programme • MPS Architects was awarded the Helen Josephson Perpetual Award for Innovation at the Gold Coast City Council Urban Design Awards 2005 for integrating the Pink Poodle Motel into the Wings Resort development in Surfers Paradise • Hassell has appointed Kirsti Simpson as managing principal of Queensland operations. Ian Calley has also joined the Queensland office from Darwin as a principal • The RAIA has launched the Make Your Mark programme to encourage students and graduates to work in regional Queensland • The “topping-off” ceremony has been held to mark completion of concrete works on the new Queensland Gallery of Modern Art and the redeveloped State Library • The RAIA is calling for expressions of interest in the Ask an Architect @ RAIA programme, through which members of the public can spend two hours with an architect in return for a donation to the Ozcare St Vincent’s Homeless Person’s Hostel • Brynn Lummus has been appointed associate of MPS Architects’ Gold Coast office • Keira van Doornum has been appointed senior interior designer at PDT Architects.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Kerry Hill Architects has won the international competition for Centre Stage, the new Performing Arts Venue for Perth • HBO+EMTB has appointed Nadia Paulse as senior designer. Andrew Macliver has been appointed Director of Architecture • The RAIA WA Chapter has purchased new premises. The Nedlands building was designed by Julian Elischer in 1964 and has been listed by the RAIA as one of the top twentieth century buildings in WA • The competition to design Perth’s new Multi-purpose Indoor Entertainment Sports stadium has been won by Ashton Raggatt McDougall and Cameron Chisolm Nicol Architects, with American firm RTKLTaylor Robinson has been awarded the $38M redevelopment of Kwinana High School.

NEW SOUTH WALES

Group GSA has appointed Ben Graham and Amanda Stanaway as associate directors, and Tracey Symons as an associate • Architects Johanssen + Associates has won a design excellence competition for the facade of an EnergyAustralia Sydney substation in Darling Harbour • Cockatoo Island, a former convict prison and shipbuilding site in Sydney Harbour, is to become a centre for design and engineering services • Landcom and the Department of Planning have announced the Western Sydney Parklands Ideas Competition to generate ideas for a 490 hectare section of the Western Sydney Parklands, the largest metropolitan park in the world. Judges include Prof Tong Wu from UWestern Sydney, Roderick Simpson of Simpson Wilson Architects, Peter Dransfield of Multiplex Group, CSIRO Future Cities Program director Carol Howe, and Diane Menzies, Commissioner of the Environment Court New Zealand • PDT Architects has completed the redevelopment of the Lismore Shopping Centre • The City of Sydney held a Green Square Planning Forum to look at the city’s plans for the Green Square Urban Renewal Area • Dr Kerry London of UNewcastle received the Chartered Institute of Building Award for research excellence for her work mapping the Australian construction industry, which could lead to a better understanding of economic regional development • The Centre for Social Theory and Design at UTS has held its inaugural conference, Cosmopolitanism and Place: The Designs of Resistance • Damien Pericles has returned from Europe to resume his role as senior landscape architect at Pittendrigh Shinkfield Bruce • Sydney Square, an open space of approximately 5,300 square metres for major public events in the block in front of Sydney Town Hall, is another step closer to realization with the City of Sydney’s purchase of the ground and first floor strata units of 309 Pitt Street • Watermark Architecture and Interiors has appointed Nick Woolfenden as design director • City of Sydney has approved a new 1.2 hectare waterfront park for a derelict industrial site at Pyrmont. The park will provide another link in the chain of waterfront access that will ultimately stretch from Garden Island to Glebe • The State Library of New South Wales has launched The Arrival of Modernism on its new website, atmitchell.com, which features primary documents relating to Australian architecture in the 1950s • The long awaited Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney, “City of Cities: A plan for Sydney’s Future”, has been released • Julian Brenchley has become an associate director at Jackson Teece • Harry Margalit has been appointed as associate professor at UNSW and is now programme head of architecture. Cath Lassen has been appointed as a lecturer, and will design stream leader along with Maryam Gusheh.

Taylor Cullity Lethlean has been appointed to design the new Nature Discovery Centre at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve • The design competition for the National Police Memorial in Canberra has been won by Fairweather Proberts Architects, in collaboration with Urban Arts Projects • Norgrove Park, the first public space at Kingston Foreshore, is open • The Canberra Central Taskforce’s report on the future direction of planning and development of the City Hill Precinct has been released. The proposals have the potential to create a further 425,000 square metres of commercial, residential and retail development • The inaugural Canberra Biennial: City of Architecture and Design was held in November 2005. Arranged around the theme of Temporary Dwelling: Changing Dimensions of Living, the biennial featured a three-week exhibition of twelve international submissions showcasing temporary accommodation, as well as a program of national and international guest speakers • Colin Dwyer AM is the new RAIA ACT Chapter manager • Johnson Pilton Walker has won the competition for the new National Portrait Gallery, Canberra.
