HOK Sport is the master designer for the main stadium for the 2005 China Games ›› The annual awards for the American Society of Architectural Illustrators were judged recently in Melbourne by Barry Marshall, Colin Still and John Gollings. The Hugh Ferriss Memorial Prize was won by Gilbert Gorski, the Formal Category Award by Advanced Media Design (Jon Kletzien), the Sketch Category Award went to Marc L’Italien, Barrie Marshall’s Juror’s Award was won by Columbus Cook, Colin Still’s Juror’s Award by Les Chylinski and John Golling’s Juror’s Award by Roberto Ou. Four Australians won Awards of Excellence: David Duloy, Serge Zaleski, Jeremy Lamont, and Peter Edgely. The society’s annual conference will be held in Brisbane in October, accompanied by the Architecture in Perspective 17 Exhibition

Peter Johnson was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for service to education as the inaugural Chancellor of UTS, for the development of academic standards and leadership in education issues, to the Australian Council of Professions, and to the architectural profession in the Australia Day Honours List. George Williams, of Caloundra, Qld, was appointed a member of the Order of Australia for his service to landscape architecture, particularly as an educator and administrator. Percy Everist has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the architecture profession, and to the community through the Geelong Art Gallery and Lifeline ›› Landscape architect Lady Jean Brodie-Hall has been appointed as a “Honouring Women” ambassador, part of an initiative to have more women achievers officially recognised through national awards and honours structures ›› The new national president of the Planning Institute is John McInerney, formerly chief planner of the City of Melbourne, the City of Sydney and currently commissioner for land and planning for the ACT Government ›› Women Architects in Australia, by Julie Willis and Bronwyn Hanna, was launched in Melbourne in early March. Published by the RAIA, the book is the outcome of a Sisalation Scholarship awarded to Willis in 1995

An architectural advisory panel has been appointed to review the Spencer Street Station redevelopment proposals. The panel is Peter McIntyre (chair), Leon Van Schaik, Peter Crone, Gerry Neylan and Scott Danielson, (who has worked on Mass Rapid Transport systems in Singapore and Taipei). They will report to the executive group that is evaluating the best overall bid in terms of the design, engineering, technical and commercial criteria ›› The State Government has announced Central City Studios as the preferred tenderer for the development of the $40m film and television studios at Docklands. Hassell are the architects for the consortium ›› Philippe Starck is involved the redevelopment of the old Victoria Brewery into a mixed-use project named Tribeca East Melbourne. Heritage architects for the project are Allom Lovell & Associates and Bruce Henderson. Urbis are the urban planners and interiors will be undertaken by Hassell, Hecker Phelan, Rice & Skinner, SJB Interior Design, Daryl Jackson.
