NATSPEC launches student competition

The National Building Specification (NATSPEC) has launched its annual competition for 2022, directed at architecture students enrolled in Australian universities who can demonstrate the innovative or sustainable use of materials or systems.

The NATSPEC Student Prize challenges students to explore the ways in which architects control and communicate the quality and performance of innovative design in construction.

The submission may include the use of new or existing materials in a way that is innovative or compelling to the jury, documenting and specifying the materials or systems. Proposals may be submitted by individuals or teams of up to four members.

Students will need to show how their proposal can be incorporated into building systems by providing detailed drawings and specifications as well as an explanation of how the proposal can be delivered on site.

The prize rewards original ways to document and communicate material, systems and construction quality and performance requirements. NATSPEC envisions prize entries incorporating materials and systems that are practical, sustainable, affordable and well-researched, with low embodied energy and a small, local footprint.

An independent jury will select the prize winner, who will receive $8,000 , and two highly commended proposals will receive $1,500 each.

The NATSPEC Student Prize is opened to all students enrolled in a Master of Architecture degree. Applications will close on 7 November.
