Hassell has been ranked the number one architecture practice in Australasia for a second year running in the Building Design magazine World Architecture survey // Hassell chairman Ken Maher has been featured in Sydney Magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People // Winners of the Trans-Tasman Timber Design Awards are: David Boyle Architect, Residential Housing Award for Burridge Read Residence; and Turner and Associates Architects and Taylor Thomson Whitting Consulting Engineers, Commercial Construction Award for Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa // The Australian Design Alliance has announced His Excellency Michael Bryce as its patron. He has also been appointed a Life Fellow of the Institute and inductee into the Design Hall of Fame // International architects Fumihiko Maki, Juhani Pallasmaa, Luis Mansilla, Francois Roche, Luis Callejas, Sebastian Mejia, Lisa Iwamoto and Manuel Aires Mateus have been announced as speakers at the 2011 National Architecture Conference, 14–16 April // Ian Eric Oelrichs was awarded a Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the general division on 26 January 2011 for service to the tourism industry, particularly through education and to regional development. Associate Professor Marie Madeline Lester was awarded a Member (AM) in the general division of the Order of Australia for service to the profession of interior design as a practitioner and educator, and for promotion of the industry in a range of roles with national and international representative organizations. Peter Elliott Spratt was awarded a Member (AM) in the general division of the Order of Australia for service to engineering through the conservation of historic buildings, the establishment of an online building degree course and through contributions to industry associations. Michael Rayner was awarded a Member (AM) in the general division of the Order of Australia for service to architecture, particularly through leadership roles in the planning and design of the built environment, and to the community of Queensland. John (Jack) Hutchinson was awarded a Member (AM) in the general division of the Order of Australia for service to the building and construction sector, through executive roles with industry organizations, and to the community. Marion Blackwell was awarded a Member (AM) in the general division of the Order of Australia for service to conservation and the environment, particularly through the Australian Native Plants Society, and to the profession of landscape architecture // Michelle Cramer has been appointed as Hames Sharley’s Portfolio Director of Urban Design and Planning // The Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council has called for a federal minister and department for cities and urban development to ensure the nation meets its urban challenges.

South Australia

Jason Chambers of DesignInc, Adelaide is the winner of BlueScope Steel’s Cool Ideas competition // Watpac Limited’s newly established South Australian construction business has been awarded the $75 million Adelaide Airport Landside Infrastructure project // Nick Tridente of Tridente Architects has been appointed SA Chapter President for a two-year term, a role that also includes that of National Director of the Institute // Cheesman Architects has announced that Scott Boyd Turner, Dinda Nolasco and Scott Suter have become associates // The SA Government has appointed a team of ARM, TCL and Aurecon to develop a masterplan for Riverbank on the Torrens // SA Health Partnership (Silver Thomas Hanley, DesignInc and Tract) are the consortium for the $1.7 billion New Royal Adelaide Hospital // RAIA life fellow Keith Neighbour passed away at his home on 4 February. He is survived by his partner Gudrun Tamandl and his two daughters, Latha Matters and Gina Squire.

Australian Capital Territory

Annabelle Pegrum, Alastair Swayn, Catherine Townsend, Colin Stewart and Melinda Dodson were elevated to Life Fellows, while Allan Spira, Candida Griffiths, Cassandra Keller, David Clarke, Eugenie Keefer Bell, Geoff Driscoll, Ross Feller, Nino Bellantonio, Peter Overton and Victoria Grounds were elevated to Fellow at the 2010 Institute ACT Chapter Christmas party // Simon McPherson of SJB Urban is now a member of the ACT Planning and Land Authority’s Expert Reference Group // The 2011 main ACT Architecture Award Jury includes Shelley Penn; Gai Brodtmann, Member for Canberra; David Flannery, University of Canberra; Nino Bellantonio, Ail Studio; Philip Leeson, Philip Leeson Architects; and Tim Brown, Guida Moseley Brown Architects.

Tasmania

Xsquared Architects has appointed Alex Newman as an associate in its Hobart office // In December 2010, Gehl Architects presented the first stage of Hobart’s Inner City Development Plan to the Hobart City Council in the report entitled Hobart 2010: Public Places and Public Life – a city with people in mind. During February and March 2011, the Council carried out a formal, comprehensive consultation program to obtain community views on the recommendations // Karen Davis of CDA Architects has been elected as the new Institute Chapter President. New Chapter Councillors are Scott Balmforth, Alysia Bennett, Todd Henderson, Peter Walker and Andrew Williamson // The Resource Management Planning and Appeals Tribunal in Hobart has rejected Save 10 Murray’s appeal against the Parliament Square proposal, which will result in the demolition of 10 Murray Street. At the time of writing the group was trying to raise funds for an appeal to the Supreme Court.

Western Australia

David Karotkin has been appointed the Institute’s WA Chapter President // Curtin University lecturer Khoa Do has joined Hassell in a design and critique facilitation role // The Morley City Centre Master Plan by Hames Sharley has received the Planning Institute of Australia Western Australia’s Minister’s Award and the Urban Plans and Ideas Award.

Northern Territory

Hames Sharley has won the commission for architecture services for Flinders University Northern Territory Medical Program Development at Royal Darwin Hospital. A major focus of the program will be the recruitment and training of Indigenous medical students to become doctors in the territory.

New South Wales

Philip Cox, David Chesterman and Peter Webber (former NSW Planning Commissioner and NSW Government Architect) are leading Architects and Planners Concerned About Barangaroo – a group of fifty-seven architects and planners, which has called for a public inquiry into the process and released an alternative scheme.
