RAIA National Architecture Awards 1998. At the top of Australia’s last 20th century construction boom, these Awards reflect a scene of optimism and prosperity. Prizes go to rail stations (2), road improvements (2), shops and restaurants (4), university complexes (2), offices for an Aboriginal company (1), refurbishments of old monuments (3), and houses (3). Only one skyscraper—in Malaysia—is honoured (no luck for architects of many city apartment towers). Also no joy for Queensland ‘high commendation’ winners accidentally barred from national judging. The jury— Ric Butt, Maggie Edmond, John Ballinger and William Fraser— have mainly preferred expressive works using industrial palettes. Their choices suggest that even after 23 years of obituaries, the spirit of modernism isn’t dying. It’s learning how to dance to new cosmologies and technologies.
