Small-footprint, multigenerational and environmentally conscious living are just some of characteristics integral to the homes shortlisted in the 2023 Houses Awards.
Jury chair and editor of Houses magazine Alexa Kempton said, “The jury was pleased to see among this year’s entrants examples of homeowners taking agency over their homes’ environmental impacts. We observed examples of Passive House design, off grid design, and all-electric homes, and hope that this is as much a consequence of a growing demand from consumers as it is a result of advocacy from the architects.”
“We saw many examples of brave and joyful homes that are unique to their occupants. The jury thought this was a conscious move away from ‘broad appeal’ and towards a highly individualised design that reflects the clients’ personalities and individual lifestyle needs,” she added.
The 2023 jury also comprises Melissa Bright (Studio Bright), Sioux Clark (Multiplicity), Kieron Gait, (Kieron Gait Architects), and Anthony Gill (Anthony Gill Architects), with Clare Parry (Development Victoria) as sustainability advisor, Helen Lardner (HLCD) as heritage advisor and Simone Bliss (SBLA Studio) as garden or landscape advisor.
Winners will be announced at a gala presentation at the Art Gallery of New South Wales on Friday 28 July 2023. Each category attracts a cash prize of $1,000. The awards will culminate in the announcement of Australian House of the Year, the winner of which will receive $5,000.
