Split into five parts and studying twenty-seven major houses, The Classical Country House takes a look at the evolution of the traditional British country house since the seventeenth century and into the twenty-first century. The houses featured are bold and clear statements of classicism and symmetry. The book shows how, in the last five centuries, this style was revived in the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance and has enjoyed a new life after World War II in the work of architect Raymond Erith and, more recently, in the work of architects such as Quinlan Terry and John Simpson.
Author David Watkin has selected more than 150 images from Country Life, which has published a weekly article on country houses, with photographs, since 1897.
