Jury comment
This work resulted from an earlier masterplan incorporating new community facilities, car parking and a new landscape connection to the beach. The core landscape function was to assist in the integration of the various facilities and functions into the experience of the park. A timber deck is the key device to link elements across the site. It has a careful resolution that winds under the main new building, physically and visually linking the north and south parts of the park. The deck form has been manipulated around existing stands of banksia and folded into a fence, providing a windbreak, and then further sculpted to form bench seating in the lee side out of the wind. This central device in weathered timber is highly successful in encouraging people to engage with the wider functions of the park and its material condition and sculptural form are very apt to a beachside place.
