Design Institute of Australia welcomes nine new inductees to its Hall of Fame

The Design Institute of Australia has announced nine new inductees into its Hall of Fame for 2017.

A diverse group of designers and an architectural photographer have been inducted into the Design Institute of Australia’s Hall of Fame.

Among the design luminaries announced as inductees were interior designer and author Babette Hayes, designer Chris Connell, Design Centre Tasmania founder Gary Cleveland and photographer John Gollings.

Mid-century furniture designer Michael Hirst was inducted posthumously, as was trailblazing Indigenous textile and ceramics designer Shirley de Vocht.

The full list of 2017 inductees:

Gary Cleveland AO, who founded Design Centre Tasmania and is a “major promoter of design in Tasmania.”

Chris Connell, recognized for his design of “many iconic Melbourne restaurants and bars” as well as for his design of commercial and bespoke furniture.

John Gollings AO, an architectural photographer who has “captured four decades of contemporary Melbourne architecture and interiors.”

The late Michael Hirst, who was a mid-century furniture designer and manufacturer, renowned for his wire-frame chairs and tables.

Linda Jackson, a textile and fashion designer “who defined Australian Fashion in the 1970s and 80s” through her labels Flamingo Park and Bush Couture.

Collette Dinnigan, a South African-born fashion designer, known for her design of red carpet, celebrity and bridal wear.

Pamela Easton and Lydia Pearson, an influential Brisbane-based fashion design partnership of more than 40 years.

Babette Hayes AO, an interior designer, decorator and stylist who wrote many articles and books on interior design between from the 1960s through to the 1990s.

The late Shirley de Vocht, a textile and ceramics designer working in Sydney from the 1940s who “paved the way for female and indigenous designers.”
