Inside the best homes of 2021

What are the fundamentals of a welcoming home? According to Australian Interior Design Awards juror Ryan Genesin, homes that celebrate intimacy, retreat, entertaining and family are certainly a good start.

“There is an amazing body of work in this year’s Residential Design category, but there are a few projects that really capture a sense of unexpected awe,” said the director his eponymous Adelaide-based studio.

“The detail of these spaces explores various ideas of colour, concealment or calm. All projects embrace ideas of home and living with great use of light and shadow, setting a stage for the interior space to be viewed through a play on materiality. These principals have been explored regardless of project size or style.”

The shortlisted entries in the Residential Design and Residential Decoration categories make up more than 40 percent of the Australian Interior Design Awards shortlist in 2021.

“These are remarkably sophisticated interiors exhibiting thorough investigation and use of furniture, furnishings, objects and art,” said fellow juror Patrick Kennedy of Melbourne practice Kennedy Nolan.

“Evidence of curiosity, knowledgeable and appropriate placement of design classics, and innovation with new and original elements prevail.

“The Residential Decoration category displays assured and confident curation of diverse elements to make convincing, surprising and balanced rooms.”
