The jury responsible for selecting the winning design for a new mixed-use facility at the Suttons Beach precinct on Queensland’s Redcliffe Peninsula has been revealed.
A national competition to design a new mixed-use hub at the site of the former 1937 Suttons Beach Pavilion was announced in October 2023 – commissioned by the City of Moreton Bay and overseen by Citylab. The City of Moreton Bay mayor, Peter Flannery, said during the launch announcement that the competition was initiated with the objective of creating a new precinct with potential capacity for hospitality offerings, rooftop areas, and bathroom and changeroom amenities.
The jury panel will be made up of five individuals, each of whom have their own unique area of expertise. The jury comprises the Australian Institute of Architects Queensland chapter president, Amy Degenhart; director of Jackson Clements Burrows, Graham Burrows; Queensland Government Architect, Leah Lang; director of Lat Studios, Nathalie Ward; and client project director at Moreton Bay City Council, Paul Cunningham.
Members of the jury were appointed by competition lead, CityLab. Following the appointment, Mayor Flannery met with the jury to pass on community sentiment about the precinct, as well as brief them on the long-term vision of the area.
“The jury are a group of highly competent and established professionals from the architecture industry and bring years of experience and knowledge to the project,” Flannery said.
Jury member and Queensland Government Architect, Leah Lang, said the project will breathe new life into the much-loved seaside destination. “We hope that an external lens over this treasured Redcliffe space will bring a fresh perspective to the project,” she said. “We want to help the peninsula community to once again love this space, and it is our mission to bring the right people and the right ideas together to do just that.”
Finalists of the Suttons Beach Pavilion architectural design competition will be named in February, with the competition winner anticipated to be announced by mid-2024.
