An Architectus and Ingenhoven Architects-designed building at 505 George Street, which is set to become Sydney’s tallest residential tower, has received planning approval from the City of Sydney.
The proposed 270-metre tower will include 507 apartments with a rooftop restaurant and bar, while the podium will comprise cinema, retail and conferencing facilities, a childcare centre and a meeting room facility for the council.
Architectus and Ingenhoven Architects won a design competition for the project in 2018.
The founder of the Düsseldorf-based firm Ingenhoven Architects, Christoph Ingenhoven, said “It is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to add a high-rise to Sydney’s wonderful skyline – a sustainable addition to the city, a ‘friendly neighbour’ in the public realm, that due to its integral ecological and green design positively impacts the environment.”
The tower will be designed to integrate with the existing surroundings and to improve pedestrian connectivity at ground level by linking George Street and Kent Street.
Architectus principal Ray Brown said, “The mix of uses and street activation will redefine the precinct and add to a more diverse and connected neighbourhood.”
Also approved at the 14 May Central Planning Committee, was in-principle planning consent for a 150-metre tower for the adjacent site of 525-529 George Street.
The mixed-use building would contain a three-to-four-storey podium with commercial uses and a tower above containing hotel accommodation and residential apartments.
Candalepas Associates has prepared an indicative design for the project and a design competition will be held for the final design.
A five-storey Event Cinemas building, which currently straddles both sites, will be demolished to make way for the towers.
