Vale Maxim John Zuvela, 1940–2022

Maxim John Zuvela led T and Z Architects for over 50 years with dignity and astute professionalism. His meticulous and considered nature fostered a thriving practice that continues to have a significant impact on Perth’s architectural landscape.

From its establishment in 1965, T and Z Architects quickly became much more than an office, because Max was much more than merely an architect or a boss. He led a tight-knit team that became, for most, a second family, with many remaining with the firm for decades.

Max led by example, tirelessly devoting himself to his projects and to the practice of architecture. As a result, the practice was as well resolved and ordered as his buildings. He mentored all within the office with great thought and patience, and proactively engaged with the broader architectural community, freely devoting his time. By doing so Max helped shape a generation of architects for the better.

Max’s balance of the corporate and the communal saw his practice naturally gravitate to community driven projects, delivering hundreds of educational and aged care facilities across Perth. Max was not motivated by ego, but rather strove to deliver the client and the community the biggest return on their investment. He fostered a collaborative and inclusive approach that sought to fully understand the client’s needs and valued the contributions of the broader design team. There would not be many suburbs within Perth where the community is not bettered in some way by one of Max’s projects.

Max was a consummate gentleman and his leadership, positivity and friendship were an inspiration to all that knew him. His influence will continue to impact the culture of his T and Z family, and Perth’s greater architectural community, for years to come.

Max was laid to rest at a private service on Saturday, 22 October 2022.

Rest in peace, Max.
