Winners revealed: 2018 Think Brick Awards

The winners of the 2018 Think Brick Awards, which celebrate excellence in the use of clay brick, concrete masonry and roof tiles by architects and designers, have been announced at a gala dinner at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne.

The Horbury Hunt Commercial Award was split between two significant projects – the Australian Embassy in Bangkok by BVN and the Learning and Teaching Building at Monash University’s Clayton Campus by John Wardle Architects.

Of BVN’s embassy in the Thai capital, the jury said, “The architects are able to use brick and exploit its ability to absorb light. The texture changes its perception as you move closer to it.”

They also praised the way John Wardle Architects used brick in “a fabric-like way to produce an object that sits in [a] space in a sumptuous form. It’s geology meets the woolly jumper.”

The five winners each took home a $10,000 cash prize. A new addition to the awards was a $10,000 prize for the best submission from a new entrant.

The 2018 Think Brick Awards winners are:
